Flora Annie Miles Duncan

CENTENARIAN

1923 - 2023

Flora Annie Miles Duncan, age 99, quietly joined her loved ones in heaven on February 8, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She was born November 18, 1923, the eldest daughter of Henry Lee and Mary Morris Miles, and was married to the love of her life, Norman Van Duncan.

Flora and Norman had five children. After all the kids were in school, she completed the requirements for a teaching certificate. Most of her teaching career was in the fourth grade at Westmore and Scera Park Elementary schools. She was a talented educator and influenced many students.

As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she enjoyed finding—as she put it—cousins with FamilySearch. She would spend several hours each day working on the computer searching for, puzzling out, and correcting family history entries. Part of her world travels involved being a missionary for the Church. Flora completed five different missions. First, to the Central States Mission, where she met Elder Duncan. Then after she retired, she served in Norway, Washington D.C., Thailand, and finally, Switzerland.

In later years, Flora became involved with Elder Quest, a senior continuing educational organization associated with Utah Valley University. She is a founder and charter member of Elder Quest. With the advent of COVID, Zoom meetings allowed her to continue participating in classes even after her eyesight failed. Flora loved learning new things!

Flora was an avid naturalist and traveled extensively to go birdwatching and discover the flora and fauna found around the world. Some trips were educational in nature, others to go birdwatching. Of course, there were the overseas missions, and when she discovered cruising, she was able to take many less strenuous trips.

Flora is preceded in death by her husband, Norman Van Duncan; daughter, Rebecca (Jean) LeVanger; one grandson; two great-granddaughters; her parents and siblings.

She is survived by her children: Stephanie (Warren) Taylor, Esther Duncan, Taylor (Mary) Duncan, and Gaile (David) Sheffer. Flora and Norman are blessed with 16 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

Services: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Chapel Location: 95 North 600 West | Orem, Utah
Interment: Timpanogos Memorial Gardens

— Walker Sanderson Funeral Home | 2023
