Allen "Al" J. Karl, age 90, a Manitowoc resident, passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2023, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc.

Al was born on December 5, 1932 in Manitowoc, son of the late Edward W. and Blanch D. (Matczynski) Karl. Al worked at Manitowoc Equipment Works until entering the United States Army. He enlisted in January of 1952 and went to Fort Riley, Kansas, for basic training (E Company 86th Infantry Regiment). After a short leave, Al was shipped overseas in 1952 to Korea (24th Infantry Division). While in Japan, he was called on to attend C.B.R. schooling (chemical, biological, radiological warfare training) in Camp Gifu, Japan. Following training completion he was sent to Korea (reassigned to 40th Infantry Division 223rd Regimental Combat Team). Al was stationed in several areas in Korea including Heartbreak Ridge, Kumwan Valley (Iron Triangle), and Punch Bowl to name a few. After completing the necessary points, he left Korea for the U.S. in April 0f 1953. Al was separated and released from active military service on October 27, 1954. Al transitioned to the Army Reserves to fulfill his 8 years. He was honorably discharged in February of 1960, completing active military service at Fort Lewis, Washington, with the rank of Sergeant. During his military service, he received the Korean Service Medal with two bronze service stars, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge.

On September 21, 1957 he married the former Ethyl Mayre Smith at St. Mary Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Upon his return to Manitowoc, he returned to work at Manitowoc Equipment Works for a short period. He then began a 40 year career at Aluminum Goods Manufacturing, later known as Mirro Aluminum Company, later known as the Newell Corporation. Al began as a semi driver, later becoming a Supervisor and ended his career as Head Supervisor of Transportation. After retiring from Newell in 1996, he joined Culligan Water Company and worked in the office until again retiring in 2016 after 17 years.

Al enjoyed being involved in many veteran's activities (donating much of his time), and enjoyed every minute and every story of service ever told! He joined the V.F.W. Otto Oas Post #659 in 1952 (while in Korea), later becoming a lifetime member. Al was a five-time V.F.W. Post Commander (1986, 1988, 2000, 2001, 2002) and several other positions including currently Post Quartermaster. He was the V.F.W. all-state Commander in 2001-2002. He also joined the American Legion Post #88 in 1954, serving in several of those post offices, and was also on the Manitowoc County Legion Adjutant for one year. Al was also a charter member of the Polish Legion of American Vets Post #214 as treasurer before it was dissolved. He was also a lifetime member of the AMVETS Post #99, a member of the "pup tent 34" military order of the cooties, and a two term Seam Squirrel (Commander) before it too was dissolved. He was presently a member of "pup tent 23" out of Green Bay. Al was also a member of 40/8 voiture 1130, Chef DeGarr (Commander) for two terms, as well as many other offices for the organization. He was currently a member of 1434 of Calumet County. Al was also honored to be an associate member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 731.

Al was on the memorial committee (1985) to solicit donations and build the current Manitowoc County Veterans Memorial and care for the memorial after completion. He was active for many years as secretary – then treasurer of the Veterans Council. Al also served as a member of the Manitowoc County Veterans Commission. He was awarded the very first Manitowoc County Veteran of the Year in 2003. Al was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles – Aerie 706 and a past member of the NRA, and Seagulls Club. He was a very proud member of the Manitowoc Honor Guard for the V.F.W. and American Legion Post.

Al enjoyed deer hunting with family and friends, as well as summer fishing – because ice fishing memories are just of the cold. He particularly enjoyed these hobbies at a family cabin by Hayward, WI. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved to watch his beloved Packers and was in attendance for the famous "Ice Bowl." Al also liked to watch the Badgers and Braves, eventually becoming a Brewers fan. He attended many games and proudly commanded the Honor Guard for the V.F.W. Post #659 during the Flag Presentation during opening ceremonies at both County Stadium and Miller Park. Al was an appreciative participant in the Honor Flight in October of 2014 to Washington D.C. Al loved his family (both blood and military) unconditionally. He loved his community and he loved to give his all for all of them! There will never be another like Allen J. Karl. And we are all the better for having known him! Survivors include his wife: Ethyl Karl; three daughters: Patricia, Michelle and Brenda; eight
