Fred served in the US Army infantry in WWII. After the conclusion of the war, he suffered major injuries when the B-17 he was flying home in had to be ditched in the Tyrrhenian Sea on August 1, 1945. Of the twenty-five souls on board, 13 were killed in the incident and the remaining 12, including Fred, were rescued at sea over twelve hours later.

At the time of his death, Fred was survived by his wife, Lilian.
