Brian De Jong, age 63, of Orange City, passed away on Friday, February 17, at his home in Orange City, Iowa.

Brian Jay De Jong was born on October 12, 1959, the son of Jay and Gloria (Marra) De Jong. He was a lifetime resident of Orange City, Iowa. Brian was very young when he was able to rattle off the make, model, and year of vehicles driving by as he sat on the front porch of the family home on Albany Avenue. He loved riding his bike all over town and visiting with people as he went.

Brian graduated from Maurice-Orange City High School with the Class of 1978. He worked in production at K-Products/American Identity and spent many years working as a CNA for the Orange City Area Health System. Patients and residents of long-term care loved Brian for his humor and tender care.

Volunteering for OCAHS was a perfect fit for Brian, who always wanted to help others. The hospital Volunteer Services recognized his work and named him Volunteer of the Year in 2002. Brian made great Scotcharoo bars, which people could order. However, being Brian, he gave away far more than he ever sold. He loved his two Shih Tzu fur babies, Izzy and Stella.

For more than 25 years, Brian was a volunteer with the Orange City Chamber of Commerce. He was very involved with the Tulip Festival, especially in the Windmill Information Booth. You would see Brian driving a golf cart all over downtown making sure things were going as they should during the annual event. He was often referred to as Mr. Tulip Festival. In 2016 the Steering Committee named Brian the Parade Marshall. This meant a lot to Brian, especially having his sisters, Sherry and Sheila there to celebrate and ride with him in the parade.

Brian loved the Lord. He was a member of New Hope Evangelical Free Church. Although Brian had been baptized as an infant, in 2016 he chose to be baptized as an adult. He proclaimed his love for Jesus and lived out his faith by loving and caring for others.

Brian was known for his sense of humor and booming laughter which could be heard often. He loved to laugh, was mischievous and delighted in a good joke with others. Brian had a collection of ugly Christmas sweaters and took great joy in wearing them during the season. He was a person people enjoyed being with and shared his friendship with all who wanted it.

Brian was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and many aunts and uncles. He is survived by his sisters; Sherry (Tom) Arndt of Carefree, Arizona, and Sheila (Timothy) Cowles of Elkhorn, Nebraska; two nieces; Brooke (Jared) Donnelly and Audra (Ron) Scott; four great nephews and nieces, Gavin, Evan, Ileanah, and Marceline; two aunts; and many cousins.
