Enlisted January 13, 1908, in Troop 8, Squadron C Cavalry, NYNG, at the Bedford Avenue Armory, Brooklyn, NY.

He was commissioned 1st Lieutenant, Medical Corps, December 28, 1909. an assigned to the 14th NY Infantry Regiment. He was promoted Captain, January 29, 1913.

The 14th NY Regiment was called up for service on the Mexico border and mustered in, August 2, 1916. The regiment was assigned to Camp McAllen, Texas as part of the 6th NY Division (later to be the 27th Division). He returned to Brooklyn with the regiment and mustered out of border service, October 11, 1916.
