Rev. Joseph M. Derrig, 69, of Darby, who formerly headed Roman Catholic parishes in Norristown and Philadelphia, died of complications of interstitial pulmonary fibrosis Oct. 29 at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood.
Father Derrig was pastor of St. Patrick Church in Norristown for seven years and then was pastor at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Philadelphia from 1997 to 1999. For the last six years, he assisted the pastor at St. Pius X Church in Broomall.
He was especially committed to ministering to the sick and elderly, his sister, Sister Mary Derrig, said.
Father Derrig grew up in South Philadelphia. After graduating from Southeast Catholic High School (now St. John Neumann), he entered St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. After his ordination in 1963, he assisted pastors at several churches in Philadelphia, and at St. Colman Church, Ardmore; St. George Church, Glenolden; and SS. Peter and Paul Church, West Chester. For two years he taught Spanish at Roman Catholic High School. He enjoyed music and art, and visiting museums in this country and abroad.
Sister Mary said that when her brother was serving at St. Madeleine Sophie's Church in Philadelphia in the 1960s, he mentored a young seminarian, Ronald Gainer, who was assisting at the church. They remained friends, she said. Gainer, who is now bishop of Lexington, Ky., was the homilist at Father Derrig's Funeral Mass Thursday at St. Pius X Church. Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon.
In addition to his sister, Father Derrig is survived by sisters Catherine McManus and Abigail Derrig.
