Born in Lakewood, NJ, Marie was a resident of Ewing before moving to Hamilton Township in 1993. She was a graduate of Neptune High School, Class of 1947 and was employed throughout her four years of high school at the Jersey Shore Medical Center. Prior to her marriage, Marie attended the Asbury Park Business College in the evenings while working full time at the American News.
She worked for American News as a bookkeeper and Keystone Savings and Loan as an administrative assistant in the mortgage department, prior to becoming a clerk typist for New Jersey Manufacturer's Insurance Company for 21 years. Prior to joining New Jersey Manufacturer's, Marie also ran her own daycare business and loved spending time with children.
She was a devoted member of the Central Baptist Church in Ewing Township since 1965, a member of the ROATS (Reach Out & Touch Someone) church group and was a member of the Nottingham Garden Club in Hamilton since 1993.
Marie enjoyed gardening, reading, photography, and dancing, which included Ballroom, Square Dancing and Country Western all at the Nottingham and Hightstown ballrooms. She also enjoyed the many trips through Central Baptist Church and Starr Bus Tours to the Sights and Sounds in PA and New York City. Marie, along with both of her late husbands, enjoyed traveling all over the United States and Europe. They took many exciting vacations, one of the most memorable was a trip to the Holy Land during the Christmas season.
Marie was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. She truly cherished time spent caring for her family, especially her wonderful grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Marie wanted to express to her family and friends how much their loving devotion meant to her throughout the years.
Predeceased by her parents, George W. and Elizabeth (Van Benthuysen) Matthews; her husbands, John A. Stewart, Jr. and John F. Bartek; her sister, Charlotte Williams; her brother, George Matthews; and her brothers-in-law, Neil Douglas and George Bartek; she is survived by a daughter, Marie E. Mennel; two sons, Frank M. Stewart and William J. Stewart; her step-daughter, Cathy Weed and her husband, David; her sisters, Emma Newton, Margaret Douglas and Eve Vitale; her nine grandchildren, Nicole DiPrinzio (Glenn McKenny), Jennifer Ricca, Kristina Martino, Matthew Mennel (Steph Mahle), Brittany (Lawrence) Mikos, Megan Ledford (Erik Brennan), Cameron (Rachel) Stewart, Emerson (Kristin) Stewart and Shannon (Brad) Noirot; her three step-grandchildren, Jenna, David, Jr. and Jonathon Weed; her 22 great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law, Paul Bartek; her sister-in-law, Barbara Matthews; her many nieces, nephews and cousins; and her beloved feline companions.
