Pilot of B-29A-15-BN Superfortress #42-93955, nicknamed "Colleen."
Taking off from North Field, Guam, for a bombing mission to Tamashima, Japan, the B-29 suffered engine trouble. The pilots jettisoned their bomb load into the sea and attempted to make an emergency return to the airfield. But they were misaligned with the runway in poor visibility weather and power was lost when the pilots attempted to pull up in an effort to avoid colliding with fixed objects, and the airplane stalled and then plunged off a 300 foot cliff and down into a jungle covered ravine and burst into flames. Of the eleven-man crew, only one survived. Four of the men could not be positively identified. Some 50 years later, personnel doing surveying work found the wreck site and made some discoveries. Forensic activities allowed recovery of additional remains of the crewmembers. These remains were interred at Arlington National Cemetery and given a monument with all ten airmens' names on it, but not all ten airmen are buried here.
Killed were:
1st Lt. Carl R Bauer II, O-668384, Pilot
1st Lt. James D Gilbert, O-797987, Co-Pilot
2nd Lt. Leslie A Evans Jr, O-556152
