‎ ‎ ‎ CALDWELL - Marcus Ayres (Mark) Bates, long time Idaho newspaperman, died at McCall at 12:45 a. m. Saturday.
‎ ‎ ‎ Mr. Bates, born Dec. 24, 1864, near Cambridge, Mo., on March 6, 1894, married Daisy J. Mitchell at Star. He was teaching at Star at that time.
‎ ‎ ‎ After being employed with Caldwell paper, in 1903 he started publication the Parma Herald and printed that paper until 1917 when he closed shop at Parma and moved to McCall. There, in 1918, he founded the Payette Lakes Star.
‎ ‎ ‎ For the last 30 years, he has been with the Star.
‎ ‎ ‎ Survivors are his daughter, Nina, Caldwell teacher; a son, Charles of Los Angeles; a brother, Frank of Kansas City, Mo.; two sisters, Mrs. J. E. Comer of Parkville, Mo., and Elizabeth Graham of Los Angeles, and one granddaughter.
‎ ‎ ‎ Services will be 8t 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Peckham-Dakan chapel here with Dr. H. H. Hayman, assisted by the Rev. C. James Miller, officiating. Interment will be at Parma.
‎ ‎ ‎ Mr. Bates was a charter member of the Parma IOOF lodge, organized In 1900.
