Businessman, Philanthropist. A graduate of the University of California in Berkeley, Magnin's business career began when he went to work for the Joseph Magnin Co., the department store chain founded by and named after his father. By 1940, he was appointed president of the company and in 1952 he as appointed chairman of the board. Well known for his numerous philanthropic donations and fundraisers in San Francisco, he was appointed the city's first Chief of Protocol in 1964 and served as such until 1986. In addition, he also had roles in the movies "Foul Play" (1978), in which he played Pope Pius XIII, and "Maxie" (1985). For all of his contributions to the city, Magnin is commonly known as "Mr. San Francisco."
