Born and raised in Amityville, William Louden Burn's future was practically laid out by his father who also chose a career dedicated to public service. Mr. Burns, a former Amityville Mayor, New York State Assemblyman and a member of the Amityville Fire Department died January 11, 2005, at his home in Florida. He was 91. His name and his family's history of public service is preserved in a Village Street in their honor, Louden Avenue.
Mr. Burns was born January 24, 1913, to Arthur and Grace (Louden) Burns. After graduating from Amityville schools, he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Merchant Marines During World War II.
During his lifetime he filled many important roles in his community. He is a former member of the N.Y.S. Assembly, for three terms he was mayor of Amityville and Village trustee for another six years.
Former Village Mayor Emil Pavlik remembers his friend of over 40 years as a mentor.
"When I was thinking of becoming mayor, I went to him, and he was very honest. Over the years he was a wonderful sounding board for me, and he will be missed."
Mr. Burns was a member of the Amityville Fire Department for 62 years where he started as a member of the Hook & Ladder Jr. Fire Dept. and rose to company captain from 1945 to 1947. He was also former vice president of the Suffolk County Village Officials Association, past president of the Amityville Rotary Club, member of the Amityville Businessmen's Club, on the advisory board of Southside Hospital, past commodore of Unqua Corinthian Yacht Club, past president of N.Y Military Alumni Association, Y.M.C.A. State Sponsoring Committee and a member of the Suffolk County Republican committee since 1935. In addition, he was a member of the Amityville Chamber of Commerce, member of the Suffolk County Republican Club and a member of the Lindenhurst Exempt Volunteer Fireman's Association. He was honored as "Man of the Year" in 1992 and was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Amityville.
"He made sure we were aware of our family history," said his daughter Martha. "We take pride in our heritage because of his careful genealogy of our past. We will continue to pass that down."
Mr. Burns is survived by his daughters Susan Burns Palmer and husband John of Michigan and Martha Burns Binstock and husband Robert of Ohio. His grandchildren, John William Palmer, Jennifer Kinne Binstock and Laura Palmer Anderson also survive him, as do his great grandchildren Jeffrey and Steven, his nephew Rennold A. Lueder and wife Wendy and great niece Diedre Brekken and husband Rolf. Mr. Burn's wife of 44 years, Florence Kinne Burns, predeceased him.
Mr. Burns reposed at the Powell Funeral Home, Inc. in Amityville, January 15, 2005. He was interred in Amityville Cemetery. Donations in Mr. Burns' name can be made to the Christopher Reeves Paralysis Foundation, 500 Morris Ave., Springfield, NJ 07081.
