William was the son of Sir George Gordon, 2nd Earl of Huntly (1435-1502) and Annabella Joan Stewart (1432-1494).
He married Janet Ogilvy in 1501, and they had at least one son, George Gordon, 2nd Lord of GIght, 4th Earl of Huntly.

He, along with thousands of others, was killed in the Battled at Flodden Field. He was 42.
