HALLIE REEVES
Found success in business
Hallie Holt Reeves married when she was 17, at the beginning of the Great Depression, and she knew hard times in her Kansas hometown.
"My Dad had to drop out of college in Pittsburg, Kan.," her daughter, Helen Overhardt, said Friday. "They came to Michigan in the 1930s."
Overhardt's father, Ralph, worked at whatever jobs he could get, then began building the Globe Gear Co., an auto supply firm in Royal Oak.
He and his wife turned it into a successful business, and when he died in 1963, Mrs. Reeves took it over, managing it for about 10 years.
She died Wednesday at Alterra House in Troy. She had lived in Birmingham for 22 years and was active in Birmingham civic affairs.
About the time she retired from Globe, Mrs. Reeves decided to go back to school, enrolling at Oakland University, where she majored in sociology. She earned a bachelor's degree in 1976.
Besides her daughter, survivors include a son, Louis; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at noon today at the Wm. R. Hamilton Co., 820 E. Maple Road, Birmingham, where the family will receive friends for an hour before the service. Burial will be in Acacia Park Cemetery, Beverly Hills.
