On January 15, 1916 she married a man named Russell John Higgs. She was married to Russell only a short time when she became pregnant with twin daughters from another man named David Anderson. The daughters were named "Eveline Edith" and "Maxine Ethel" Anderson. Russell either divorced or had his marriage to Mary annulled. Tragically, both girls died at about 4 months old from an unknown cause to Mary. Both death certificates show Mary as a "single" mother.
Within a month of the death of her twin girls in 1918, she married David Anderson. He was a coal miner. She had 2 more children by him. Both lived to maturity. They were Georgia Elizabeth Anderson and Robert Clifton Anderson. Her husband was working as a crane operator but in 1922 took the family to Wheeling with his father to be a coal miner. He died a few months later of a bleeding ulcer. She came back with the children on the train and was a single working mother for a while. Her son Robert was raised by David Anderson's father and mother nearby until he was 11 at the time of their death.
In 1930 she lived with her daughter Betty in the Selby Building, apartment 30. Betty was 12. Robert was living with his grandfather and grandmother. He was helping to care for them, which he did until age 11 then he had his own room in the same building.
In 1934, she lived at 116 Hickory Street and was married to Mr. Sylvester Hawkins. He was a coal miner.
