Albert was born in Michigan's "copper country" to Carl and Lydia (Filpus) Silfven. He graduated from Hancock High in 1923. His father, Carl, ran a photographic studio in town. He married Lina Anderson in 1931, had a son, and divorced in 1940, marrying Dolores Silfven and moving to Detroit. In 1953 the family moved to Mackinaw City, where Al started working for the ferry, then on ore freighters on the Great Lakes as a watchman and then a wheelsman. He loved coffee, burnt toast, watermelon and cats.
