Obituary:

Zoegale Childers Monsen, 70, of San Antonio, TX, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2022, after a courageous, year-long battle with Cholangiocarcinoma (liver bile duct cancer).

Zoe Gale was born March 6, 1951, in Claremore Oklahoma, the fifth of six children and the youngest of 3 girls born to Owen Sr. and Verna Childers. Zoegale was a beautiful, happy child with a big, infectious smile. Adventurous and curious she quickly fit right in with a rowdy, busy household and enjoyed her role as the "baby" girl. Zoe wasn't a common name in the 50's, but her name was as unique as she was. Zoegale was always ready for a new adventure and travel must have been in her DNA because it became a favorite pastime.

Zoegale completed her high school coursework at Nathan Hale Sr. High School early and graduated with her class in 1969. Her higher education was put on hold when she moved to Houston, Texas to join her sister and brother-in-law, and a new adventure began. She promptly found a new job with Dresser Industries and became a technician reading seismic data. She was also a dedicated "Big Sister" volunteer mentoring teen girls facing adversity. Zoegale never met a stranger and quickly made new friends and found an apartment close to her work.

In 1973 Zoegale was off on a new adventure when she moved to California. She met and fell in love with a wonderful man, William "Bill" Monsen. They were married in Lake Tahoe on December 31st, 1975. Zoegale and Bill originally settled in the San Francisco Bay area. Zoegale was working at Chevron when Bill suggested she should consider pursuing her higher education goals. Zoegale agreed and enrolled at St. Mary's University. Upon graduation she began a new career at what was then World Savings.

1979 began as a happy time when Zoegale learned she was expecting her first child. She was thrilled to become a mom and preparations began. Alison was born August 1, 1979. She tragically passed away 4 months later of a congenital heart defect. Zoegale was devastated and prayed she would be blessed with a healthy child. Her prayers were answered when a beautiful, healthy baby girl and the light of her life, Sydney Alyssa, arrived.

Zoegale worked in mortgage banking for over 30 years. She started her career in the San Francisco Bay Area and relocated to San Antonio, Texas in the early 1990's as part of the management team establishing a new banking operation. Bill was retired, so the family packed up and moved to San Antonio. They built a beautiful new home in Fair Oaks Ranch and settled in. Bill had a part-time engineering consulting business and worked from home. He was also an awesome cook. They both enjoyed entertaining. Friends and family were always welcome. Zoegale and Sydney endured another great loss in 1997 when Bill passed away after suffering a stroke. Zoegale and Sydney, his family and everyone who knew Bill mourned the loss of an intelligent, caring, wonderful man. Sydney graduated from high school and they eventually moved to a home closer to San Antonio. Zoegale was very proud of Sydney when she attended and graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Zoegale loved to travel and together, with her good friends and her travel companion, Sydney, she experienced many beautiful things and places such as, Europe, Australia and Hawaii (she loved the beach). She loved her beautiful, sweet West Highland Terriers, Sugar, Louie and her constant companion, Shelby, Frisbee the "Fat Cat" and all animals in general. She also had a fondness for frog princes and watching cute animal videos. On beautiful days she would be found outside in her garden tending to her plants and enjoying mother nature.

Zoegale suffered with chronic illness for most of her adult life. She retired from Wells Fargo in 2007 to concentrate on her health. She loved her job and the special friendships she had with her co-workers. Zoegale was a strong, loving mother and stepmother, sister and aunt. She was clever and fun, determined to overcome her many challenges. She will be remembered for her positive, admirable disposition and wit to the end of her journey. She leaves behind her loving daughter, family members and many life-long friends. There are not enough words to express how much she was loved and will be missed.

Zoegale is survived by her daughter: Sydney Alyssa Monsen. Stepchildren: Tom Monsen, Bill Monsen, Christine Monsen, Bob Monsen, Marie Monsen, and their spouses and children.

Siblings: Sharon Schafer, Owen Childers Jr., Dennis Childers, Dale Childers and their spouses and children.

She is preceded in death by grandparents: Arthur and Mary Locke and Ellis and Tennie Childers.

Parents: Owen Childers, Sr. and Verna Locke Childers.

Sister: Connie Sue Childers.

Husband: William Harry Monsen.

Infant daughter: Alison Adelaide Monsen

Stepdaughter: Katherine Monsen Freeburg

The family would like to thank the Start Cancer Center staff and her oncologist, Dr. Surapaneni, the caregivers at Cardinal Health and Sherry Gonzalez. The loving care from health workers at Suncrest Hospice Care and VITAS Hospice. Our sincere gratitude to the staff at Morningside Manor and her friends in the Morningside community who cared about Zoegale and checked on her routinely and to Barbara who fell in love with Shelby and is giving her a loving new home.
