Erwin was born on Galloo Island in Lake Ontario, the second of seven children born to Lewis and Ellen Roberts. He came with his family when they relocated to Watertown, New York when Erwin was around 9 or 10 years old.

He married Jenny [Montondo?] [in September 1900?], who was a dressmaker, in Watertown. They lived at 19-1/2 Emmett (Watertown City Directory for 1904), then at 107 Arsenal Street (ibid, 1905).

Erwin died of typhoid fever at City Hospital in Watertown, age 34 years, 6 months, on 27 August 1905. He was laid to rest in the Roberts family plot at North Watertown Cemetery, next to his brother, Wilbur. No info is available on whatever happened to his widow or if Jenny and Erwin had had any children. She was last listed by the name of Jennie Roberts, dressmaker, rooming and working at 310 Jay Street in the Watertown City Directory for 1912.

Erwin's obituary, as clipped from "the Watertown paper," 28 August 1905, reads as follows:

Inscription

Across the rounded top of Erwin's marker, the letters thrust outward from the surface, and almost worn away (though they could still be "read" by fingertips) is the name, "ERWIN W." The marker is a white stone slab and its face reads: "SON OF / LEWIS & ELLEN / ROBERTS / 1871-1905."
