Dr. John Armistead Barrow, III, 74, of Eldorado, passed away at 10 a.m. Friday, March 7, 2008 at his residence.

He was the husband of Kay (Drone) Barrow. Previously he was married to Mary Hamilton Carson.

John was born in Abingdon, Va., on Sept. 21, 1933, the son of the late John and Mary Belle (McGlamery).

He was an orthopedic surgeon. He practiced from 1969 to 1995 in Nashville, Tenn., Henderson, Ky., Evansville, Ind., Harrisburg, McLeansboro, Benton and Eldorado, where he made his home.

He was a medical director at the hospital in Nome, Alaska, for two years. He also held a medical license in Alaska.

He was a member of the Vanderbilt Orthopedic Society, St. Louis Orthopedic Society, Southern Illinois Medical Society, American Medical Society, Ducks Unlimited, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and the American Rifle Association.

John is survived by six daughters, Jan (Rod) Silverman of Arizona, Julie (Brian) Tucker of California, Rita (Steve) Etienne of Eldorado, Mary Jane Barrow of McLeansboro, Leigh (Dustin) Lane of Eldorado and Emily (Thomas) Grey of Florida; five sons, John (Kim) Barrow of McLeansboro, Lee (Karen) Barrow of St. Louis, Tom (Vicki) Barrow of Virginia, Sam Barrow of South Carolina and Jeremiah Barrow of South Carolina.

He is also survived by grandchildren, Emilie (Jeff) Stivers, Katie (Brian) Russell, Sarah Barrow, Sydney Barrow, Johnny Barrow, Justin Barrow, Preston Barrow, Ryan Neal, Random Neal, Jessica Etienne, Daniel Etienne, Thomas Barrow, Helen Barrow, Gabe Tucker, Ian Tucker, Karis Lane, Anna Grey; and four great-grandchildren, Hannah Russell, Taylor Russell, Carson Stivers and Wyatt Stivers.

John is also survived by a brother, Jack (Darla) Barrow of Virginia; nephews, William and Jack; and niece, Mary Lee.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stepson, Mike Duff.

Funeral services will be at Colonial Terrace Funeral Home at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, 2008, with Msgr. Joseph Lawler officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Equality. Friends may call noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2008, at Colonial Terrace Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Crippled Childrens Elk Foundation or the Ferrell Hospital Foundation; both may be left at the funeral home.
