Minnie Kendall Lowther's book "History of Ritchie County" gives early history of the county and early settlers including Layfield family. Paraphrased from the book:
William Layfield was the surviving son of an Indian massacure of his parents (father was James Layfield). William and his only brother were swept away by a terrible storm when they were trying to escape from the Indians, which saved his life.

William Layfield and Margaret Crawford were the parents of seven children. Their first born was son John Jackson Layfield Sr., born where William settled as the first settler on the south fork of the Hughes River above Smithville in the wilderness. This later became the S. H. Westfall farm.

John Jackson Layfield Sr. and Elizabeth (Moats) Layfield were the parents of 11 children, one which died in childhood. Their children were:

1. Mary Elizabeth Layfield: b Feb 23, 1825 Wood Co, VA - d Dec 23, 1899, Ritchie Co, WV, married Uriah D. Shrader, both buried Layfields Cemetery.

2. Henry Layfield: b Sep 1828 Wood Co, WV - d Jul 22, 1909 Ritchie Co, WV, married Harriet Furr Nov 11, 1858, buried Layfields Cemetery.

3. Margaret Layfield: b Nov 29, 1828 Wood Co, Va - d May 11, 1895 Ritchie Co, married Milton Reger Feb 2, 1859; Milton Reger b abt 1824 Lewis Co, WV - d unknown.

4. James Layfield: b Jul 15, 1832 Wood Co, Va - Jame Layfield married Elizabeth Moats September 21, 1854.served in Union Army, injured September 1864, died April 11, 1865 Burkeville, VA, after Battle of Saylor's Creek, Virginia April 6, 1864. Pvt. James Layfield died 5 days after Battle of Saylor's Creek. He was buried with many other Union soldiers on the farm where the battle was fought and where they died, with location and date noted by Federals. The soldiers were reinterred from 1866-1868 after Poplar Grove Federal Cemetery, Dinwiddie, Virginia was made ready. His burial place became known to family in 21st century. Beloved wife Elizabeth Moats Layfield buried Layfields Cemetery.

5. Isaac Jacob Layfield: b Sep 1834 Wood Co, VA - d Jul 1865, married Agnes Drake Oct 21, 1865, both buried Layfields Cemetery.

6. Julia Layfield: b Nov 3, 1835 Wood Co, VA - d Apr 24, 1935, did not marry, buried Layfields Cemetery.

7. John Jackson Layfield Jr.: b Mar 2, 1838 Wood Co, VA - d Jul 13, 1933, married Salinda McDavitt Oct 10, 1861, both buried Layfields Cemetery.
