Rick was born in El Paso, Texas. His family moved to Michigan, and he lived most of his life there.

He loved the outdoors. Fishing and hunting were among his favorite things to do.

He was married to Vickey Lynn Cronk. They had one son, Shane Michael Atkinson. Vickey had two sons prior to their marriage, Robert and Timothy Cronk. Rick loved them as though they were his very own.

He was always true to his word. He promised his friend, Rich Irish that he would come and help with work on a piece of land that Rich owned that
needed to be cleared. Rick walked 15 miles to get there to help.

Shortly afterwards, Rick had surgery on his neck and back. He never fully recovered from it, and was left paralyzed. he spent the last two years of his life in Health Source of Michigan. His doctor found a tumor on his liver, that was cancerous, and he only lived a few months longer.
