William was born to Sarah M (Terry) and James Kennedy Allen. In 1854 William moved to Texas. He had three younger siblings. He married Sarah after serving in the Confederate Army. He built a small log cabin on farm land in 1864. He and Sarah had two children. After Sarah died, Allen married her sister Theodocia in 1871. Four children were born to their union. William's cabin is now located at the White Settlement Historical Museum. A historical marker stands in front of the cabin.
