From Harold E. Mauk, Sr.'s book:
John Oliver Mauk was born to Gilbert Byron Mauk and Lucinda Jane (Catlin) Mauk in Clark County, Illinois. Gilbert and two of his sons made the Land Run and became dairymen in the Carrier/Hillsdale area. After John got to Oklahoma, he had mental problems. He was hospitalized for them, given treatment, and returned home. It has been said, people did not let him forget his troubles. 22 Nov 1897 John Oliver Mauk died of a self inflicted gunshot wound. He had shot himself while the folks were out, in the cellar of the old homestead near Carrier. He is buried and has a nice gravestone in the Carrier, Oklahoma cemetery.

Inscription: "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God"
