August "Gus" C. Winkler, age 82 years of Temperance, MI, died Wednesday, April 5, 2006 in Tender Care of Monroe, Monroe, MI. Born Oct. 9, 1923 in Toledo, OH , he was the son of Clarence and Julia (Czaja) Winkler. A WWII Marine veteran, he was one of five who came home from his unit. He was in action against the enemy at Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands, Saipan, Tinian, Mariana Islands, Okinawa and Ryukyu Islands. He married Ruth Lewis on May 25, 1946 in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Erie, MI. He was owner/operator of Winkler's Carry Out in in Lake City, MI He also had owned G&J Barber Shop in Point Place and was past president of the Barber's Union, District 50. Gus was a charter member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Temperance, where he served as an usher, was a member of K of C, Council 8902, Mt. Carmel and served as past president of Mt. Carmel Credit Union. Gus was also a member of the Lou Diamond Detachment of the US Marines, American Legion Post 192, Temperance, and a charter member of the V.F.W. 3925 Post in Erie, MI.

Surviving are his loving wife of 59 years, Ruth. Children, Linda A. Winkler of Temperance and Wayne (Laura) Winkler of Berkey, OH. Brothers, Frank (Eileen) Winkler of Temperance, Stanley (Georgia) Winkler of Deerfield, MI, Joseph (Rose Marie) Winkler of Sands Spring, OK, and Daniel (Linda M.) Winkler of LasVegas, NV. Sisters, Mildred Nitschke of Fremont, OH, Bernadette Moralas of Tennessee and Roseanne (Vern) Williamson of Milton, FL and 3 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 daughters, Carol Ann and Judith Ann Winkler, brother, Clarence Winkler, Jr. and Sister, Francis Stone.

Visitation will be held Friday from 2-9 pm in the Michael W. Pawlak Funeral Home, 1640 Smith Road, (at Jackman) Temperance, MI, where VFW will hold services at 7:00 pm followed by the Rosary recited by the Knights of Columbus, Council 8902. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 11:00 am in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, where he will lie in state after 10:00 am. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Erie, MI. Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Childrens Hospital or the VA Medical
