U.S. Congressman. A veteran of the Second Seminole War of 1836, he graduated with a law degree from Emory University Georgia, in 1856, was admitted to the bar in 1857 and moved to Quitman, Texas, in 1858. There he practiced law and was a school teacher. During the Civil War, he served as a First Lieutenant in the 5th Texas Volunteer Regiment, Confederate Army. He fought in the Battle of Gettysburg, was taken prisoner and remained so for the duration of the war. After the war, he moved to Tuskegee, Alabama, practiced law and was a circuit judge, (1874-86). In 1887, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fiftieth Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1896. After his term, he resumed the practice of law and was a delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1901. For health reasons, he relocated to New Mexico, until death at age 67.
