John Ivey Amon, Jr.

John Ivey Amon, Jr., 96, passed away on April 7, 2023 at the Kinston North Carolina State Veteran's Home surrounded by his family and loving Veteran's Home staff.
John was born on March 29, 1927 in Moultrie, Georgia to the late Ivey and Pearl Batchelor Amon. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he began his climb up the ladder of success from tobacco farmer, to tractor salesman to a national top producing insurance and securities broker of his own business, John Amon & Associates in Goldsboro, North Carolina. He was proud to be an American and took an active roll in supporting his chosen local, state and national political candidates after his retirement at age 82 until his death.
During his younger years, he led St. Luke Methodist softball and bowling teams to victory on numerous occasions. At the same time, active in the St. Luke Methodist Men's Club, he grilled countless steaks and fried fish for their outings and for the Boy Scout camp outs. John could be relied on to usher every Sunday, generously contribute to his grandchildren's church programs and keep you laughing with a never ending supply of corny jokes. Always ready for a new adventure and making new friends, he was an active member of the Wayne Masonic Lodge #112 A. F. & A.M. Recently the lodge honored him with a 60 year membership pen.
In his middle years golf became his passion…numerous trophies, photos of golfing outings with good friends and colleagues, and often told stories reflect his diligence, pursuit of excellence, and relish for life. Another passion of John's, enjoyed with his wife, Beatrice Batts Amon, of 69 years was traveling to 49 states, as well as, Italy, France, Monaco, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Mexico.
John passed onto his four children, Belinda, David, Gale and Mike, a legacy of love for family, friends and gardening. John and Bea created two warm, inviting homes in Goldsboro and at Emerald Isle, NC that were always graced with flowers and greenery from their garden. His much loved children, grandchildren and nieces and nephews learned the value of joy, generosity, optimism and living life to the fullest first hand from John.
John is survived by his daughters, Belinda Klau and husband, Gordon of Florida and Gale Lewis and husband, Dennis of Goldsboro; sons, John David Amon and wife, Linda of Winterville and Michael Amon and Judy Herlihy of Goldsboro; grandchildren Kimberley Corcoran and husband, Sean, Justin Lewis, Lyndsey Lewis, Jessica Harrell and husband, Russell, Michelle Amon and John Michael Amon; and six great grandchildren.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to the angels at the North Carolina State Veteran's Home in Kinston who cared for John during the past eight months.
