Clara Mae was one of eight children of James Milton Varner and Mary ElDora Plummer. She was born in a farmhouse on Kennedy Farm Road, but lived in a number of towns while she was growing up as her father was a Methodist minister.

She married Robert Faircloth and they became the parents of six children. Clara Mae was very much like her own mother Dora; kind, nurturing and very devoted to her family, both immediate and extended. Sadly, she lost one child, May Dell, to diphtheria at age five. Her other children grew to adulthood and went on to have sucessful lives and families of their own.

After the death of her husband, she lived for a time in Greensboro, NC. At the time of her death, she was brought home to Reidsville to lie at the side of her beloved husband Robert.
