Officer Robert C. "Bob" Banker was shot and killed on Thursday, March 19, 1987 while on routine patrol. Officer Banker was checking fishing licenses at Lacy Lake, located in northeast Christian County, Kentucky. Officer Banker issued a citation to a male subject for fishing without a license. After the citation was issued, Officer Banker turned and walked away. At this point, the subject shouted loudly to Officer Banker and as Officer Banker turned in response to the shouting, the subject using a .22 caliber rifle fired several shots three of which struck Officer Banker in the chest.

Officer Banker had been with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, Law Enforcement Division for only 1 year and 5 months. Before that he worked in the Division of Fisheries as a Fisheries Technician Senior. He is survived by his wife and 2 children.
