On September 15, 1873, the lake steamer Ironsides slipped beneath the waves of Lake Michigan about 3 miles off the Grand Haven coast at 12:10 pm. Of the five lifeboats, only two reached shore. The other three were capsized by the surf. Mr. Frederick Bitting and his wife, Elizabeth, were drowned on Lake Michigan at Grand Haven. They were enroute home, coming by way of Grand Rapids, where the State Fair was in progress.
