Merle Ashmead
Ottumwa -- Merle E Ashmead, 75, of 926 Lee Ave., died at 12:20 a.m. Feb. 18, 2002, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
He was born Dec. 20, 1926, in Rock Island, Ill., to Edwin Earl and Etta Mae Gee Ashmead. He married Maxine Eakins June 13, 1947.
A resident of Ottumwa most of is life, he worked for John Morrell & Co. and the Wapello County Sheriff's Department and retired as dispatcher for City Cab. He later worked for Collaborative Laboratory Services. He served in World War II with the Navy. He was a member of Miller Chapel.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Varina Maxine Brown of Ottumwa; five grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Reece Funeral Home, the Rev. Bill Eakins officiating. Burial will be on family ground.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Jakki Short, Gary Short, Guy Ware, Melissa Ware, Dennis Brown, Todd Blew and Waylon Adcock.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Bloomgrem.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Inc., 312 E. Alta Vista Ave, Ottumwa.
