On to Oregon:
That in 1853 two years after the death of her father John Buckingham in Miller, Gentry County, Missouri that Maria joined her mother younger sister and younger brother Melissa and Charles with them was an older sister and Nancy Kimes and her brother in law Lewis Kimes and two nieces Mary Elizabeth (4yrs) and Edna Katherine Kimes (age 2 yrs.) left the families were on their way to meet up with older brother Hiram Buckingham and another sister Mary Elizabeth Hines in Oregon.
While at Missouri River crossing Lewis Kimes drowned while helping others cross the Missouri river. The women and their young children were left alone to try and find their way to Oregon.
It was here on the shores of Missouri River Elizabeth and Nancy hired two brothers by the name of Pittock. Robert Pittock and his younger brother Henry went on to drive their wagons on to Yamhill Valley Oregon. On September 22 1853 wagons reached Fort Umatilla. Elizabeth filed for land next to her son in Yamhill Valley. After leaving Fort Umatilla they went by Barlow Trail over the Mt Hood area. On Oct 13 1853 exactly three weeks to the day after filling for land the family arrived in Oregon City. After leaving Oregon City the families travel down valley to Yamhill valley and met up with Mariah's older brother Hiram Healton Buckingham and his family. There the families settled next to what is now Pike Cemetery on the family farms.
While on their way to Oregon Robert and Mariah fell in love.
But it was not until Nov 9 1856 Robert and Mariah would marry in Portland Oregon and settle in east side of Portland not far from Lone Fir. There they opened up a tobacco store on the east side of Portland. John Steel was an employee and boarder for the Pittock's.
On Aug 28 1857 Robert and Mariah had twin daughters Maria and Mary. They daughters would only live a few weeks before both passed away in Oct 1857.
Lone Fir is one of the oldest cemeteries in eastside of Portland When the family who owned the land and farm was trying to sale it. Robert and Mariah along with some neighbors asked Portland to buy Lone Fir to make the farm into a public cemetery. Being told by city that the Cemetery was too far from town and the city would not buy the land. Upon hearing this Pittock's and their neighbors bought the land and opened up Lone Fir to the public. Before the neighbors bout the land Robert and Maria lost their twin daughters within months of each other. Maria passed away not long after this and is buried with her daughters.
Robert remarried to Anna Marie Watkins on July 5 1863s. Robert's & Marie's daughter's Emma Grace and Carrie Lydia died at a young age and both are buried not far from Maria's grave.
