Thomas W. Gilliam IV, 19, died and passed into the presence of our triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, on Sunday, March 27, 2011.

Tom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Gilliam, III (Vicki) of Dublin, Ireland, and formerly of Charlottesville, Virginia, and the elder brother of Benjamin and James Gilliam. He was born on December 6, 1991, in Dallas, Texas.

Tom was nearing the completion of his first year at the University of Virginia where he served on the 1st Year Council and had received an appointment to Resident Advisor for the upcoming school year. He also had been selected by the Office of the Vice President to process in President Teresa Sullivan's upcoming inaugural parade.

Tom had planned to pursue a B.A. in Foreign Affairs, spawned in part by a life lived on three continents. A graduate of Meriwether Lewis Elementary School in Ivy, Virginia, Tom finished his middle and high school years in Ireland, graduating from The King's Hospital School in Dublin.

Tom was characterized by a deep and abiding love for Jesus Christ, his family, and a wide variety of friends and strangers alike. Warm, funny, bright, handsome, and incredibly likeable, Tom embodied Life! so well for his short 19 years. His passion was to see his peers experience the same gracious love of God that he had; a grace which gave him a zeal for every aspect of life.

To say he will be profoundly missed only begins to touch his family and friends' sense of loss. Simultaneously, his family strongly rests in the knowledge that Tom is in Heaven, joining his first cousin, Jude McKay Gilliam (2005-2007) and hoping for the day when those they love will join them.

In addition to his immediate family, Tom is survived by his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Gilliam Jr. (Diane) of Charlottesville; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald B. Bledsoe (Marge) of Huntsville, Alabama; and his many aunts, uncles and cousins. These include Doug and Shannon Roberts of Huntsville, Alabama, and their children, Catherine, Joshua, Jonathan, and Emily; Steve and Susan Bledsoe of Greenville, South Carolina, and their children Summer, Haley, and Cameron; Robert and Chantal Gilliam of Beirut, Lebanon, and their children, Raed, Aiya, Jenna, and Nour; and Connally Gilliam of Arlington, Virginia.

A memorial service was held at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3101 Fontaine Avenue Extended, Charlottesville, VA 22903, Thursday, March 31, 2011. A reception followed.

The family suggests that memorials in Tom's honor be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church and designated for the spiritual care of emerging Irish leaders. Please send any memorial contributions to the church at P.O. Box 5102, Charlottesville, VA 22905.
