GENE BROMBERG OBITUARY

Gene Marshall Bromberg passed peacefully into eternal life at his home in Birmingham on Friday, April 14, 2023.

Mr. Bromberg was born on April 25, 1963, a descendant of pioneer Pike and Jefferson County families, and the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Gene A. Bromberg. He attended the Mountain Brook schools, was a member of the Mountain Brook High School Class of 1981, and lettered in varsity football. He was an honors graduate in History at the University of Alabama in the class of 1985, and was a founding member of the history museum on the campus of the University. He was a member and officer of Phi Delta Theta. He was a member of Alpha Sigma Delta in his high school years; he recently attended the Sigma Centennial Celebration. Both of his fraternities continued his father's tradition.

Mr. Bromberg was a lifelong parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He was a constant communicant who attended Mass with great frequency. He had studied with and attended the Cursillo group at St. Francis. His faith was inseparable from his life. He was a loyal and devoted son to his parents, an inspiring and loving father to his children, and a kind and most necessary brother to his family. He will be greatly missed.

Mr. Bromberg spent the first half of his career at Bromberg & Company, where he developed the Galleria and Summit stores. He was a graduate of the Gemological Institute of America and of the American Gem Society. His second career was as business management partner of Mary Evelyn McKee Inc., joining that company at its urgent request, and was essential to the planning, design, and execution of large residential projects across the Southeast. He had a phenomenal attention to detail combined with great understanding of clients' needs. He worked until the day of his death.

In addition to being a member of the Country Club of Birmingham and the Skins dogfight, Mr. Bromberg was a member of the Beaux Arts Krewe, benefiting the Birmingham Museum of Art. He had served as President of the Hoover Chamber of Commerce. He was a lifelong learner and a deep thinker, with a large, thoroughly read, library of books on history and religious topics.

Mr. Bromberg is survived by his two beloved children, Leacy Bromberg Drannan and her husband Jonathan; and Gene Marshall Bromberg, Jr., both residents of Birmingham. He was a wise parent as well as a loving one, and was so proud of Leacy and Gene and their hardworking success. He looked forward to the birth of his expected granddaughters in August.

His brothers and sisters all survive him as well: Buffy Bromberg Allen and her husband David; Katherine Alice (Bebe) Bromberg Sprain and her husband Robert; John Keenon Bromberg and his wife Amy; Mary Evelyn Bromberg McKee and her husband David; William Gregory Bromberg II; BettieBoyd Bromberg Sullivan and her husband Brian. A host of loving and admiring nephews and nieces, and their young families, will preserve many stories of their wonderful Uncle Gene unto the generations.

A Visitation at 10 a.m., followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at 11 a.m. celebrated by Father Robert Sullivan and Father Joseph Culotta will take place at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 2 Xavier Circle, Birmingham, Alabama 35213, on Tuesday, April 18, 2023.

Pallbearers will include Mr. Bromberg's nephews Richard David Allen III, William Caffey Allen, William Gregory Bromberg III, David Smyth McKee III, William Andrew McKee, John Austin Hay McKee, Brian Bruce Sullivan Jr., Charles Keenon Sullivan, and lifelong friends Winston Tilley McCalley, William Temple Seibels, and Frank Kitchell Bynum Jr. A burial at Elmwood Cemetery will follow.

Memorials may be made to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 2 Xavier Circle, Birmingham, Alabama 35213; or to the Birmingham Museum of Art, 2000 Rev. Abraham Woods Boulevard, Birmingham, Alabama 35203.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him.
