Abijah was the only child of Joseph Elwood Hampton and Mary Catharine Hoff Hampton. He was deaf.

He lived in Kingwood Twp., Hunterdon Co. all of his life. He farmed Black Leghorn chickens.

Abijah married Myrtle May Van Doren Hampton in 1909, and they had two sons: Joseph Elwood in 1910 and Morris William in 1915.

Abijah's second wife was Frances Mildred Poyer. They married about 1935-1936 in Elkton, Cecil Co., Maryland. She was known at that time by the name Jean LaBarre.
