Lionel was the only child of ALBERT FRANK MORRIS, a retail tobacconist and his wife LILY (nee REID).

He was Baptised on 1st September, 1897 at St. John's church, Melcombe Regis, Dorset, the parish of his mother's family. He was educated at Immanuel Church of England School, Stretham, London.

He gained his Pilot's licence in January, 1916 and was the Pilot in the first Royal Flying Corps plane shot down by the'Red Baron' - Baron Manfred von Richthofen.

He was severely injured when the plane crashed to the ground and was taken to a nearby German military hospital for prisoners of war. He died there of his injuries.
