Joyce was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin to John and Elsie Kosbiel (nee Hoeppner) on March 19, 1931. She went to school in Waukesha and graduated in 1949. After high school Joyce went to work as a secretary at the Wisconsin State Sanitarium for TB patients. In 1952, she married and went on to have four children. During her life, Joyce worked as a secretary at Public Service Indiana for 18 years, at St. Vincent Hospital in the medical records department for 20 years, and at the Tucson Medical Center in medical records for a few years. After finally retiring, Joyce became a nomad and traveled the United States. Joyce became quite the adventurer in her mature years. At the age of 70, she drove solo, cross country from Indiana to California, in her trusted white Civic. During that adventure, she explored many different places in the central and western United States, stopping whenever the mood hit her. For a while she put down temporary roots in Tucson, Arizona, Bradenton, Florida, and Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and ultimately re-settled in Indianapolis. Joyce loved her kids, grandkids, her nieces, and nephews, and enjoyed visiting all of them. She loved to cook, bake, and try out new recipes, all the while sipping a glass of wine and dancing to Dave Koz music playing in the background. She traveled to many places with her sister Arlene, and they were forever laughing and having the time of their lives. Trips to the casino were especially exciting for her and sometimes she even won. Joyce loved to bowl and has 21 trophies to prove it and always enjoyed a good game of Yahtzee. The story goes that she would wait for her daughter Marie to get home from school and have the Yahtzee dice ready to roll. Ever since her high school days, she loved to swim and soak up the sun, either on the beach, on the back deck, or at the lake with her niece Luann. Never one to brag, but she loved to tell the story of climbing a cliff, at an Alabama lake, and diving into the water, and living to talk about it. Joyce clearly was ahead of her time in that long before Covid-19 ever existed her favorite saying was "Did you wash your hands?" Joyce had many beloved dogs and cats she shared her home with over the years. Nana, Joyce's beloved cat is mourning her loss.

Joyce is preceded in death by her parents, sisters Joanne Cadd and Arlene Simpson, nieces, Luann Henkle and Karen Robarge, and daughter-in-law, Thanhha Coles.

Joyce is survived by children; Craig (Jennifer), Marie Lum (Van), Charles (Thara), Nadine, and grandchildren; Makani Lum (Nicole), Kaleialoha Best (Chuck), Elaina Henon (Steven), Cecilia Coles (Dominick), and Moani Lum (Brian). Joyce's legacy also lives on through her seven great-grandchildren, two step-great grandchildren.

A Memorial Catholic mass will be held on May 3, 2023, at 11 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church, 6350 S Mooresville Road, Indianapolis, with Father Jude officiating.
