Attorney. For 33 years, Mr. Farenga worked for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Chicago, the authority that handles Cook County's waste water. As a head assistant attorney for the agency, he lobbied in Springfield on the merits of upgraded sewers in Cook County. The Deep Tunnel project, for example, benefited from his expertise; looking for ways to finance the 100-mile system of tunnels and reservoirs, Mr. Farenga proved critical in sewing up a portion of funds from the state.

After retiring in April 1990, Mr. Farenga immediately started work for the water district's pension fund, a job he kept through Spring 2002. He spent extra hours pouring over figures and found a huge error that was unfairly trimming Retiree benefits.

Mr. Farenga was the son of Italian immigrants in Chicago. He played quarterback at Crane Technical High School, then put himself through DePaul University College of Law, where he graduated in 1953. He also served his country in the Army and was the president of the Missionbrook Sanitary District of Northbrook, Illinois. Mr. Farenga was above all a humble and dignified man, whose reputation as a lawyer and a lobbyist was legendary, and was deeply respected on both sides of the aisle.

Mr. Farenga passed away due to pancreactic cancer on July 2, 2002 at the age of 72. Later that year, the State of Illinois 92nd General Assembly passed a Senate Resolution in his honor and memory.
