After retiring in April 1990, Mr. Farenga immediately started work for the water district's pension fund, a job he kept through Spring 2002. He spent extra hours pouring over figures and found a huge error that was unfairly trimming Retiree benefits.
Mr. Farenga was the son of Italian immigrants in Chicago. He played quarterback at Crane Technical High School, then put himself through DePaul University College of Law, where he graduated in 1953. He also served his country in the Army and was the president of the Missionbrook Sanitary District of Northbrook, Illinois. Mr. Farenga was above all a humble and dignified man, whose reputation as a lawyer and a lobbyist was legendary, and was deeply respected on both sides of the aisle.
Mr. Farenga passed away due to pancreactic cancer on July 2, 2002 at the age of 72. Later that year, the State of Illinois 92nd General Assembly passed a Senate Resolution in his honor and memory.
