Mary Josephine Burkhardt Allen
June 16, 1934- April 24, 2023
"It is with a grateful heart that we announce the departure of our Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister, Aunt and Dear Friend Mary Jo Allen to Heaven on Monday, April 24, 2023. Mary Jo born June 16, 1934 was the oldest child of John Charles and Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" (Clawson) Burkhardt. She was born and raised in Austin and graduated from Austin High School. Mary Jo married the love of her life, Bobby Ray Allen on May 26, 1974 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mary Jo was a long time employee of Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, starting her career as an operator. She and Bobby both retired in the 80's and enjoyed traveling extensively, especially in South America. Following retirement Mary Jo and Bobby made their home in Dale and then Luling, TX.
Mary Jo was the epitome of grace and charm. She always looked like she had just stepped out of the beauty parlor, even when she had just finished working in the yard; lovely clothes, beautiful hair and makeup and matching accessories. She was a picture of elegance. Mary Jo was a wonderful hostess and great cook. Her door was always open and the coffee was always on. Many an hour was spent sitting at the kitchen bar laughing, talking, enjoying great food and a cup of coffee or beverage of your choice. She was delighted to have someone in her home for a visit. She was loved; admired and appreciated by friends and family. Nobody and we mean nobody, made better chicken salad and pimento cheese! Her hummingbird cakes were a favorite with many.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bobby Allen, sisters Annie Louise Burkhardt Nelson, husband Russell and Barbara Gayle Burkhardt Hanson.
Mary Jo was a member of Harwood Baptist Church. She was also a member of Luling Chapter #155 and Waelder Chapter #1023 Order of the Eastern Star. She was very active in both chapters as long as her health allowed and still has many friends in those Chapters. Mary Jo and Bobby both enjoyed golf and were very active in the Luling Golf Association for many years. She was also an active member of the Caldwell County Homemakers Association and Texas Extension Education Club of Caldwell County."
