Martha Hanks Cooper grew up in Danville, with her parents Curtis and Mildred (Weatherford) Hanks, and her sisters: Laverne Campbell, Nicole Garrison and her brother, Brantley Hanks.
She graduated from Brosville High School. She received a B.A. in English at Mary Washington College where she met her husband-to-be David Cooper, a Marine Corps Captain, based in Quantico, VA
She is survived by three daughters Susan Cooper Kenny (Richard), Jennifer Cooper (Jonathan Coleman) and Dana Cooper; four grandsons, John Kenny, Cooper Kenny, Sam and Ryder Coleman.
She was an English teacher and then became a human resource manager after receiving her master's degree at American University. She worked for many years at General Electric Company.
Internment will be in Dan River Primitive Baptist Cemetery.
