John Edward Bell
March 15, 1934 - April 29, 2023

Mr. John Edward Bell, 89, of Magnolia Place in Union City, TN, passed into the loving arms of our Lord April 29, 2023, in Paducah, KY. He had been ill for a few months.

Mr. Bell was born March 15, 1934, in Ringo, Crawford Co., Kansas, to Thomas and Barbara Kotzman Bell. He grew up in Southeast Kansas, moving to Chicago in 1951 for his last year of high school. In 1952, he graduated from De La Salle High School in Chicago. He was a proud member of the United States Marines. After earning a bachelor's degree at Roosevelt University, he attended the University of Illinois-Urbana, were he earned two Master's degrees, one being in Library Science.

Mr. Bell became a university librarian specializing in Reference Materials and Government Documents. Previous to moving to Tennessee, he worked at the University of Iowa, University of Illinois-Urbana, and Northern Illinois University. He came to the University of Tennessee at Martin's Paul Meek Library in November 1980 and retired in August 2011. Over those years he thoroughly enjoyed working with the Library and University staff and mentored many work-study student-workers. He volunteered for a few years at the library after his retirement.

Mr. Bell was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Union City. He loved sports, especially baseball, basketball and football, and was an avid fan of the Chicago White Sox, the Illinois Fighting Illini and UTM Skyhawks. He enjoyed his family and friends, especially when reminiscing with his cousins and childhood friends. A good steak and a healthy salad were his ideas of a perfect meal. Also, a good Chinese restaurant was always an option! Over the years, Mr. Bell enjoyed taking trips to the casino in Metropolis, Illinois.

Mr. Bell was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Thomas A. Bell. He is survived by a nephew, Mark H. Bell of Goodlettsville, TN; sister-in-law, June Bell of Springfield, TN; special friends Jessica Pyrdom and her son Mason of Martin; his Magnolia Place family and many cousins and friends around the country.

There will be a Memorial Mass planned for a later date. The family suggests Memorials can be made In Mr. Bell's name to the University of Tennessee at Martin Paul Meek Library.
