Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was a Captain of a militia artillery unit when appointed Lieutenant Colonel in the 3rd Georgia Infantry, serving under General Kirby Smith in Kentucky. In January 1863, he was promoted to Brigadier General in command of a brigade in General Breckenridge's Division, which fought at Chickamauga and in the Atlanta Campaign. After the fall of Atlanta, he commanded a brigade in General Clayton's Division that fought at Franklin, Nashville, and in the Carolinas. After the war, he became a cotton broker and chemical manufacturer.
