Donald J. Pregler, 76, of 1735 Avoca St., died peacefully at 3:55 a.m. Sunday, March 16, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, surrounded by his family.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 20, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, at the funeral home, where there will be a wake service at 3 p.m.

He was born Feb. 14, 1932, in Dubuque, son of Albert and Lorraine (Sullivan) Pregler. He married Barbara McGinnis on Aug. 30, 1958, at St. Mary's Catholic Church; she preceded him in death on Dec. 12, 1996.

Don served as a paratrooper in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

He worked at the former Dubuque Packing Company and Farmland Foods Inc. for more than 40 years until his retirement in 1996.

Don was a member of the Moose Lodge 355 and the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6.

He was very handy and would buy old houses and refurbished them. He enjoyed fishing, playing euchre and doing wooden craft projects with Barbara.

Don liked to joke around and was "the clown of the family" and kept everyone smiling. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends and his dog, Scruffy.

Surviving are two daughters, Kim M. (Jim) Boxleiter, of Dubuque and Vickie J. Hess (fiance, Dave Girot), of East Dubuque, Ill.; his grandchildren, Jim (Gina) Boxleiter, Jen Boxleiter, R.J. Hess, Dusty Girot and Shanny Girot; brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles McDonald, of Sioux City, Iowa, Wayne (Cindy) McGinnis, of Dubuque, Larry (Sue) McGinnis, of Hillsdale, Ill., and Shirley Pottebaum, of Dubuque; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Patricia McDonald and Jean (Joe) Ginter; and a brother, Dale Pregler.
