BIVENS, STELLA M. Descended from some of the earliest families to settle Mercer. Born January 6, 1878, to William D. and Mary Frances Bailey Calfee; entered Concord Normal at age of 15 to prepare for a teaching career. Retired after two years of teaching to become wife of Anthony Ernest Bivens, December 21, 1898; nine children, William Otis, Mabel Ainslie (Mrs. S.B. Chappell), Albert Ernest, Douglas Kappel, Virginia Temple, Helen Churchill (Mrs. W.W. Brown), Walter Emmett, Thomas Carlton and Charlotte, all of Bluefield. Mr. Bivens died while attending session of State Legislature in Charleston. Mrs. Bivens again taught, was postmistress 1933-35, is now county supervisor of WPA sewing projects.
