Born and raised in Washington Heights, in northern Manhattan, he was the son of Joseph and Frances Toll Blau. He was a graduate of Bronx High School of Science (Class of 1963) and Cornell University (1967), where he also earned his PhD. in operations research and met his future wife.
Robert had multiple careers, including 20 years as a trader on the floor of the American Stock Exchange and, until his retirement in 2021, as a lecturer at the City University of New York's Baruch College.
He was an outspoken member of the Dobbs Ferry Union Free School District school board for three terms and derived much joy and enrichment from being an active member of the local Jewish community.
Robert's natural teaching ability extended far beyond the lecture hall and pervaded all aspects of his life. His keen mind and strategic thinking remained a hallmark of his essence. He met people and made friends wherever he went and was an avid bridge and chess player. Among so many other things, he also enjoyed improvisational cooking, regularly entertaining friends and family in his home, and attending NY Philharmonic concerts.
