Daniel SHAWHAN, Jr., son of Daniel and Jennette SHAWHAN, was born 17 Dec 1738 in Kent Co., Maryland and died 11 May 1791 in Bourbon Co., Kentucky. He was a soldier of the American Revolution, serving in Captain Phillip Marancey's Maryland Company in 1775. His place of residence, at the time, was the Monongahela Valley, near Fort Pitt. That area was claimed by both Virginia and PA. He had also served as a private in the same company as his father back in Frederick Co., Maryland during the French & Indian War.

Daniel married Margaret BELL in 1762 at Hampshire Co., Virginia. She was the daughter of Robert BELL and Agnes FLEMING. Margaret was born about 1740 in Augusta Co., Virginia, and died about 1790 in Bourbon Co., Kentucky. Both, she and her husband are buried in the Ruddles Mills Graveyard. Their tombstones are still standing.

Daniel was the first of the family to make the same type of whiskey he had developed back in the Monongahela Valley. "Monongahela Red" now became known as "Kentucky Bourbon," named after the Co. where it was made. I proclaim that Daniel Shawhan was the originator of Bourbon Whiskey. He fathered 10 children: George, Mary, Robert, Daniel, Agnes Nancy, John, Jane, Benjamin, Elizabeth and Joseph Shawhan.
