Pekin, IL - Gilbert "Gib" I. Baechler, 82, passed away at 8:30 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2008, at his home in Pekin, with his family at his side. He was a loving husband and father.

Gib was born Jan. 3, 1926, in Momence, Ill., to Clarence and Neva (Dayton) Baechler. He married Donna Worner on June 5, 1955, in Forest City, Ill.

Surviving are his wife, Donna of Pekin; two daughters, Lee Ann (Russ) Schweizer of Crystal Lake, Ill., and Nikki Baechler of Peoria, Ill.; and two granddaughters, Gabriela and Ysabel Schweizer, both of Crystal Lake, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.

He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Gib was a member of First United Methodist Church in Pekin.

Gib graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1951, where he was quarterback and captain of the football team. While attending Wesleyan he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He received his M.S. degree from Illinois State University and post-graduate hours at the University of Illinois.

Gib began his teaching career in 1951 at Dee Mack High School where he started the football program. From 1957 to 1967 he coached football, basketball and was Dean of Boys at Pekin Community High School. He also participated in IHSA as a football and basketball official. From 1967 to 1983 Gib was Director of Admissions, Records and Registration at Illinois Central College. He retired in 1983 after 32 years in Education.

Gib was a former member and avid golfer at Sunset Hills Country Club in Pekin. All who knew him will remember him as a sports enthusiast and life-long Cubs and Bears fan. Gib enjoyed spending vacations with family and close friends in Longboat Key, Fla. He was a wonderful grandfather and loved the attention of his granddaughters.

Cremation has been accorded.
