Milly was born on February 27, 1943, in Marshfield, WI to Leonard and Ione (Carpenter) Vandehey. She attended St. Mary's Grade School in Auburndale and graduated from Marshfield Columbus High School. She married Richard N. "Dick" Schill on August 25, 1962, in Auburndale and they celebrated over 51 happy and wonderful years of marriage before his passing on March 2, 2014.
Milly began helping her mother with the telephone switchboard out of their home in Auburndale when she was 6, and later worked at the switchboard at Nekoosa Papers. She was a histology technician at Riverview Hospital for many years until her retirement in 1990.
Milly and Dick had four children, and they survive her: Mary Ellen Schill (Anita Seering) of Wausau; and Susan Schill (Tammy Shoemaker), Karen Schill (Craig Lambert), and Michael Schill of Wisconsin Rapids. She is also survived by her two grandchildren, Harrison Lambert and Josephine Lambert; and her four grand-doggies, Murphy, Stella, Shandy, and Jag. (Murphy is always first)
She is further survived by her sister Margaret Kraus and her brother Mickey (Roberta) Vandehey; her in-laws Shirley Vandehey, Karen Vandehey, Patricia Vandehey, Joe and Judy Schill, Tom and Lynn Schill, Ann and Dick See, Betty Strub, Emil and Lucille Oertel, Kathleen Klawikowski, Len Strigel, Mary and Dave Jepsen, Jane Hahn, and Helen and George Swetz; and nearly one hundred of the most awesome nieces and nephews an aunt could ever have.
She was predeceased by her parents; her brothers Larry, James, Leonard "Buster", Donald, and Frank; her sister Sister Marietta SSND; Dick's parents Nick and Helen Schill; her in-laws Ardelle Vandehey, Jody Vandehey, Tom Kraus, Marv Klawikowski, Donald and Lucy Schill, Sarah Strigel, Paul Strub, and Dale Hahn; and her Godchildren James Schill and Linda Vandehey.
Mom enjoyed spending time with her family and especially enjoyed gathering for holidays at the home she and Dick built on the River. She was a proud Grandma who loved making pumpkin pancakes and singing Broadway musicals on the ride to school.
She loved music and singing and was a longtime member of the St. Mary's Choir and participated for many years with her popular quartet in the AHS Royal Revue show. There was always music playing in the house, usually the Ray Conniff Singers. Her children were surprised to learn that Ray Conniff was not the original artist for all of the songs that made up the soundtrack of their lives.
She instilled her passion for justice, education, democracy, current events and politics in her kids and she would never miss voting in an election or an opportunity to talk about and support her candidates and causes. She enjoyed engaging with fellow political junkies online. She was a lifelong volunteer, and recently welcomed the meals that were delivered to her from the program she and Dick delivered meals for many years prior to his passing.
She was witty, strong, independent, funny, and compassionate. Any friend of her kids was a friend of hers.
It was an honor to care for her at the end of her life as she had so lovingly cared for we kids at the beginning of ours. We were fortunate because of Mike's care and compassion to be able to have Mom live at home up until her final few weeks. We know Mike will miss his "roomie".
She so missed our Dad after his passing and we are thankful they can be together again.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Dick and Milly Schill Family Fund at Incourage Community Foundation, or consider making a contribution in Milly's name to a progressive or human rights cause, or to the Alzheimer's Association.
But now the mist has lifted and in front of me I see,
A path that is clear that will lead me back to me,
A light that is shining to guide me on my way,
And a lifetime of memories as down to rest I lay.
We love you, Mom.
