Mr. Cheek was born June 21, 1887 in Marion County, Arkansas, the eldest son of John Cheek and Merniva Caldona Fisher Cheek. Dorsie Neal Cheek and Hersie Bowers, daughter of John Bowers, born July 24, l888 near Dodd City, AK were married September 3, 1909 in Marion County, Arkansas. He was a mail carrier between Pyatt and Dodd City, AR, delivering mail on horseback for a few years - then bought and operated a saw mill. Later, he moved to Welch, OK, to work in Eagle Picher mines and then moved to KS and lived and farmed about 35 years in the Melrose, KS area. His wife Hersie, died on January 22, 1967.
Survivors include three sons, James of Beaumont, TX, Dorsey Neal Cheek, Jr of Bakersfield, CA and Thurman L. Cheek of Wichita, KS, two daughters, Retha Pickering, Bartlett, KS and Natalie Anderson, Melrose, KS; five brothers, James, Bedford, IN, Dee and Clifford, Yellville, AR, Bill of Pyatt, AR and Dewey of Harrison, AR; two sisters, Mae Mitchell, Bedford,IN and Alma Cheek, Harrison, AR; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. Two infant children preceeded him in death daughter Noveta Cheek , and son, John R.
Also two adult children preceded him, son D. H. Cheek who was a senior in Columbus High School and daughter Alene Cheek -Elleman of Baxter Springs, KS.
Services were held in the Sperry Funeral Home in Chetopa, KS at 2:00 PM - Saturday, Feb. 24, 1979, with Rev. Curt Bezinque officiating.
