Kenneth R. Cross, 90, of Helena, a Helena Valley rancher, passed away Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, at his ranch in the Helena Valley.

Ken was born March 2, 1920, in Big Timber, a third generation Montanan, to Carl and Mary (Fischer) Cross. He began his work ethic early in life. He worked as a ranch hand at the age of 8 in the Nelson/York area, throughout the summer months. He learned to ride and break wild horses and work long, hard hours during his preteen years. He served in the 163rd Infantry Regiment, Headquarters Co. of the Montana National Guard from 1936 to 1939.

During his teens and 20s he drove a cab, worked for a time at the smelter in East Helena, worked in the Helena Ice Skating business, and on the Toston Dam, as well as working in local bowling alleys while also working at the State Highway Testing Lab.

Ken married Ann "Maxine" Brashear on Sept. 30, 1939, in Butte. Maxine preceded Ken in death on June 8, 1999, after almost 60 years of marriage together. Ken retired from the Montana State Department of Highways in March 1976 after 30 years of service. In 1957, Ken fulfilled his lifelong dream of owning and operating his own cattle ranch, where he peacefully died in his own home during the early morning hours on Sunday, Nov. 7.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Maxine Cross; and brothers, Charles "Bud" Cross and William "Bill" Cross.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Joe and Carla Cross, Dick and Linda Cross, Mariann and Lynn Wenstrom, Tammy and Forrest Farris and Candy and Steve Lyman. He is also survived by a brother, Russell Cross; sisters, Mildred and Frank Tillo and Marlene and Bing Gleason; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to express its heartfelt thanks to all of the private nurses and personal care assistants as well as the very special individual friends and family who came and helped make it possible for us to care for our father in his own home. Without your love and concern, it would not have been possible.

It is with utmost respect and sincere appreciation that we thank each and every person from the Hospice of St. Peter's, who made it possible for him to fulfill his wish to spend his final days in his own home on his ranch. We cannot say enough about their care and concern for all of us. It is for this reason that we request any memorials be sent to the Hospice of St. Peter's.

Cremation has taken place. We have honored our father's request to have no funeral or services. A celebration of his life will take place in the late spring or early summer when all of the generations of his family can gather together here in the Helena area.

Arrangements are under the care of Retz Funeral Home.
