Franz X. Strunk was born on 25 November 1861 in Herzfeld (near Lippetal), Prussia. According to St. Ida Wallfahrtskirche Taufregister, he was born "Franz Strunck", son of Johann Stephan Strunck and Gertrude Steinkoetter.
Before emigrating to the U.S., Franz lived in Solingen with his wife, Antonia Catharine Elizabeth Berg (b. Feb 1864 Suenninghausen) and infant daughter, Gertrud (b. 4 Feb 1896 in Soest). Franz, Tony and Gertrud sailed on the "S S Southwark" and arrived in New York on 17 August 1897. Known as Frank in the US, he was a sculptor who lived in Chicago, Illinois from about 1904 until his death in 1938. He is remembered by one of his granddaughters as "a gentle man with a keen sense of humor".
