Sarah Raiford Barnes was the first wife to Gideon Barnes, the founder of Barnesville, Ga, and mother of his children. It is through family stories and library articles that she is believed to be buried under the courthouse in Barnesville, Ga.

"Mrs. Barnes was a fine Christian and when the Circuit Rider came there was always a room ready for the parson. It was called the 'prophet's chamber.' they were instrumental along with Josiah Holmes in organizing the Methodist Church. Many times Sunday School and worship were held in the tavern until a church was built in 1827."
